Sure, Heisey is a bona-fide major leaguer, more or less (12 homers in 83 games) but it is not a refractor bonus auto. I have ripped an '07 and '08 box and I have the '10 set, so I figured why not fill the gap. Plus I could get some minis for my amalgamated ginter mini set.</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tZAoUGoe9Bs/TcQQdLkQ0SI/AAAAAAAAAcc/MQgHXhPO6tA/s1600/IMG_3205.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 186px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tZAoUGoe9Bs/TcQQdLkQ0SI/AAAAAAAAAcc/MQgHXhPO6tA/s400/IMG_3205.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603621929862877474" /></a><br /><div>Except all the minis I pulled kind of sucked. Geronimo is pretty cool, as is Negro Leaguer Frank Evans. He will find a spot in my set for sure. Probably. You never know. The fairy is cool, and a creature I don't have. </div><div><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ETT3NYdFUuU/TcQQc9EV_CI/AAAAAAAAAcU/wX7w4d9RBy0/s1600/IMG_3204.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 201px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ETT3NYdFUuU/TcQQc9EV_CI/AAAAAAAAAcU/wX7w4d9RBy0/s400/IMG_3204.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603621925970902050" /></a>I ripped strategically so I could have 1/3 of the box for my son and guarantee a hit. The hit in the first column was third from the bottom. So was the hit from the second column. So I put the third column away. As I was finishing off the second column, out pops a printing plate. </div><div><br /></div><div>Poop. Was that hit three, or a bonus? Will my son pull a relic/auto/rip in 10 years when we rip the rest of the box together? I hope so. </div><div><br /></div><div>Relics of Carlos Quinten and Matt Holliday didn't really light my fire, but the Edison Volquez printing plate is pretty cool, I guess. It is the printing plate for a short print, which is kind of funny. It is only the second plate I have ever pulled. It is the black plate, complete with schmegma.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I like the design of '09 Ginter, especially the minis. I will probably eventually see how close I am to the set sooner or later.</div><div><br /></div><div>All of the above are for trade, except whatever fits in my Amalgamated Allen and Ginter Miniature Card Set.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-20636300533283387492011-04-19T18:33:00.000-07:002011-04-19T19:24:26.520-07:00Ginter wrappers<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">Allen and Ginter was one of the things that got me back into the hobby. A bit too much verbage, I feel, and that stupid exclusive trading card logo ruins any old timeyness left. If you slapped a picture of Albert Pujols in Minty Beans place, it would be 2011 Topps, essentially. Sort of.<div><br /></div><div>So in terms of actually telling you what is inside, I would say that 2007 and 2009 do it best. The best overall design, I think, is probably 2009. 2010 is the sell out design, a bit slicked up for a fringey, but popular, product. Kind of like the design of the cards, come to think of it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Since we have seen almost every aspect of 2011 Ginter months and months before it will appear on the shelves, the last thing we will see are the wrappers.</div><div><br /></div><div>No one cares, but I always find the packaging and presentation of a product to be interesting.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-27767236440748450892011-04-15T08:10:00.001-07:002011-04-15T08:13:48.133-07:00Send Me Your Junk Wax NeedsNow I feel bad. I looked through some boxes; more unsorted cards. Cards of players I don't care about, on teams I don't like (a relative term, I only don't like one team, if that makes any sense. The rest I don't care about) of players I don't have any feelings about one way or another.</div><div><br /></div><div>I grabbed a few stacks and brought them up stairs with the intent of sorting them out. The stacks I grabbed were mostly 1980s junk wax, plus some Bowman from the late 1990s.</div><div><br /></div><div>I began to sort through them. And realized, what the hell am I looking for? I have all the Red Sox I need from 1989 Donruss. Or I could have made a collage to decorate my son's wall. Or I could have given them to my son. He likes baseball cards. He is two, and not very discerning about that sort of thing.</div><div><br /></div><div>But instead, I threw them out. I am a bad person.</div><div><br /></div><div>Ah hell, who am I kidding? No one wants 1989 Donruss. No one.</div><div><br /></div><div>Has anyone else lost patience organizing their collection and culled the stacks this way? While Beckett is a fine resource to look up cards, it is not the easiest site to deal with. So I present to you an updated but incomplete list of my Pedro Martinez collection.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pedro is my favorite baseball player, and I was fortunate to see him pitch a few times, including a 15K gem against the Rays back in 1999. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Completing the list is a work in progress. I have doubles of many of these cards, so if you need some, drop me a line.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Percentages are just a way to make me seem insignificant in the eyes of the baseball card gods, and thus deflect attention away from myself. Nothing to see here. (damn there are a lot of cards out there, even as far back as the early-mid 1990s.) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
1991 Classic/Best #355<br />
<div>
1991 UD Final Edition #2F</div>
<div>
1991 Classic III #T55</div>
<div>
3/10 (30%) (1/1 MLB cards)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1992 Bowman #82</div>
<div>
1992 Leaf Gold Rookies #BC3</div>
<div>
1992 Donruss Rookies #69</div>
<div>
1992 UD #18</div>
<div>
1992 UD #79</div>
<div>
5/13 (38%) (5/7 MLB cards)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1993 Bowman #154<br />
1993 Dodgers Police #15</div>
<div>
1993 Donruss #326</div>
<div>
1993 Flair #72</div>
<div>

One was old and sort of scruffy, the other probably mid-to-late 20s. </div><div><br /></div><div>I said "oh, pack searchers!" and they turned and looked at me. The old guy mumbled something. I watched them for a minute. The older guy was pulling packs of Topps '11 out of the gravity feeder and squeezing the top corners of the pack. He would search a few and then set them down wherever. There were stacks of Topps '11 packs in boxes of Bowman and football, neat piles of 5 or 6 packs.</div><div><br /></div><div>"Seriously." I said. "What are you searching for?"</div><div><br /></div><div>The older guy said he was looking for Diamonds, and asked what I was searching for. I told him a blaster of Topps '10 series II. (for a Jon Lester throwback, I hoped.) He went on to say that the gravity feeders were fair game and you have to get there early. </div><div><br /></div><div>I let him go. What could I say? Fuck you and die? What about the kids? What about ME?</div><div><br /></div><div>They left, with a couple of packs. I wanted to follow them out and find out if they got a diamond cut card, but I didn't. The younger guy didn't say a word the whole time.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I picked up a blaster of '11 and a few single packs in hopes of proving the searchers wrong. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qF5KhgpH8LQ/TXL3X8Tey0I/AAAAAAAAAas/UYQzhZ2Xc7U/s400/IMG_2865.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580794878962355010" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 276px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">Well, there were no diamond die cuts in the five packs (maybe six, I can't remember) that I picked, but I don't know what the odds for the die cuts are anyway. One is an ebay win, the other a thin mailer that would be familiar to veterans of the redemption circuit. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mJX5EzFvovQ/TV6ySK36x4I/AAAAAAAAAaM/0Tgsnpf8IxE/s400/IMG_2820.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575089413957535618" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 245px; " /></span>So I open it up and a slip comes out with the card, which was not the card I was expecting. What I was expecting was a 1968 Brooks Robinson from the Million, or a '10 T206 Jeff Francis auto. <div><br /></div><div>I pulled that from a blaster I split with my son. I would rather he got any hits, but I was glad I got the redemption, since it would be long expired by the time we opened it together. Nothing is worse than an expired redemption.</div><div><br /></div><div>So out comes a card. I saw the name first, and wondered why someone was sending me a Clay Buchholz.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EL3iCf29oTY/TV6ySSSYThI/AAAAAAAAAaU/UePNb1Y4LP0/s1600/IMG_2821.jpg"></a><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EL3iCf29oTY/TV6ySSSYThI/AAAAAAAAAaU/UePNb1Y4LP0/s1600/IMG_2821.jpg"><img style="text-align: left;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 276px; height: 400px; " src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EL3iCf29oTY/TV6ySSSYThI/AAAAAAAAAaU/UePNb1Y4LP0/s400/IMG_2821.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575089415947570706" /></a><br /></div></div><div>And then I saw the auto. I think the 2010 Update variations of extinct teams are borderline genius. They are the Philly As, the B'Dodgers, the NY Giants, the StL Browns, Cleveland Naps, Senators and Boston Americans. Maybe some day they will an Expos card.<div><br /></div><div>In 2010, Topps put out 62 Legends Variations. Most of them are kind of rehashes, the same players every year. Babe Ruth comes in pretty much every series. Not that I mind, but there are so many other ways to go, and without the shiny or uniform or Abe Lincoln gimmicks.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Negro Leagues. How awesome would it be to pull a Satch Paige or a Josh Gibson? Or maybe a team shot of the Homestead Grays?</div><div><br /></div><div>How awesome it be? Not sure if it is from Circle K or a game. I saw them play a few times when I lived in FL from 1999-2002. Mostly went to see the Red Sox though. Saw Ripken's last game against the Rays. A handful of '08 Ginter, some '10 Bowman Platinum and some '09 Topps Magic football. I pulled both a Heyward and a Strasburg from the other half of the Platinum blaster, so I don't know what could be in there, but who knows. In 10 years when he opens them there might be some jaw dropping RC that everyone is overlooking now.<div><br /></div><div>I just hope there is not a redemption in there anywhere...</div><div><br /></div><div>The first box maxed out with four blasters and probably 250 packs. We are going to have some fun some day.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-52692540988438327472011-01-05T17:52:00.000-08:002011-01-05T18:23:53.281-08:00Hit of the year, and thinking about this card season<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>I ripped my first packs of the year today, part of a box of '08 Allen and Ginter, and '10 National Chicle. So some of the most popular sets ever (in general) and one of the least favorite ever (it appears.)<div><br /></div><div>I pulled a couple of no-name autos from Chicle, both of which are really nice cards, on card autos and everything, and a Francouer swatch from Ginter. </div><div><br /></div><div>The other Ginter hit was a Clay Bucholz silk /10.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TSUhG66f54I/AAAAAAAAAYo/tEcBjqj4mxQ/s400/clay.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558885717836294018" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 227px; height: 400px; " /></span></div><div>It looked like this, but silkier.</div><div><br /></div><div>A rookie, of a player of my favorite team, number to 10. It might be the best card I pull all year, and I pulled it in my first rip session (I can never open just one pack...) of the year.</div><div><br /></div><div>So. I ripped some older packs. And to be honest, I see myself doing a lot of that this year. After working on the 2010 Topps base set w/SPs, I ask myself, what is the attraction? What were the highlights of last year? What were the best sets? Base gets pretty blah after a few hundred packs, if not sooner. I like the 2010 Bowman design, but... exactly. But.</div><div><br /></div><div>And of the rest, what is really that interesting? Ginter was cool, but the weakest design so far, and if the design is as uninspired this year, I won't bother beyond a blaster or four.</div><div><br /></div><div>I like Chicle for the variety of cards and styles, but there are some clunkers. I honestly don't see Topps repeating it, although they don't really seem to be in touch with what collectors want (not that I am either) so it will probably come back, and half-assed. Call it what you will, but hiring a dozen or so artists to paint pictures for a set is not half assed.</div><div><br /></div><div>But what is coming this year? Heritage is ok, I guess, but the set is such a pain in the ass to complete. It only works if you like the year that inspired the design. </div><div><br /></div><div>Old Maid, or Old Judge, or whatever the tobacco design Topps regurgitated this winter is kind of blah too. I like that kind of set, but not when it is just a fancy wrapper around some crappy photoshop filter work. </div><div><br /></div><div>But I am sure I will buy a blaster or six of that, too, to feed my cardboard addiction.</div><div><br /></div><div>In sort, where is the inspiration? Where is the effort? There won't be an SP, for your high end glossy needs. There won't be a masterpieces, for your beautifully rendered baseball art. There will be an overabundance of inserts and gimmicks.</div><div><br /></div><div>After a year back in the hobby, I just don't know what to think. Other than pass the vintage!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-37874026259196653232010-12-03T06:31:00.000-08:002011-04-19T10:41:58.314-07:00Topps Chrome Mutant setPending me getting off my duff and sending all the miscut cards from my two boxes of 2010 Topps Chrome in to be replaced (and them actually being replaced with non miscut cards) I will be pretty close to the set. This is just an assumption, but I am fairly certain I am near completion.<div><br /></div><div>But closer to my heart is a mutant set of Topps Chrome. I have to do something with all those refractors, and checkerfractors, and the rainbow of fractors that you end up with, orange, red, blue, purple and gold. I don't have any red refractors for my set, the only red refractor I pulled in my two boxes as a T206 Austin Jackson Chrome Red. Which is a pretty nice pull, as it is numbered to 25.</div><div><br /></div><div>The cards I have:</div><div>(r)=refractor</div><div>(c)=checkerboard refractor (what else do you call them? The golds may only be numbered to 50, but they are kind of ugly. I will post some doubles if anyone is after any refractors. If anyone wants an orange something and can trade a refractor of the same player, I would probably consider it. That goes of the rest as well.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-24145167485487362352010-11-19T04:57:00.000-08:002010-11-19T06:27:59.167-08:00A numerical analysis of a miscut 2010 Chrome hobby box<div>I saw a good deal on hobby boxes of Topps Chrome on the ol' internet the other day, so picked up a couple. The 2010 rookie class is pretty exceptional, at least, so far, with some rookies that seemed destined for stardom. Just ask Ryan Klesko. Add in different refractors, colorfractors, xfractors and various chromed-out inserts, and it adds up to a fun break.</div><div><br /></div><div>That is, until you really look at the cards you pull. Most of them, and I have numbers to back this up, are miscut.</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TOZ0clUvwGI/AAAAAAAAAYc/Gx4zEXOggak/s1600/ely.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 296px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TOZ0clUvwGI/AAAAAAAAAYc/Gx4zEXOggak/s400/ely.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541244425930260578" /></a><br /><div>A card can only be miscut in two ways and still be regulation size, x-axis, left-right, and y-axis, up and down. You can't have a good side opposite a bad side, you just get two crappy sides.</div><div><br /></div><div>Or four. Exhibit A, John Ely, being miscut on both axis.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TOZ0b5nlyhI/AAAAAAAAAYU/SgE9kVrwhss/s1600/stras.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TOZ0b5nlyhI/AAAAAAAAAYU/SgE9kVrwhss/s400/stras.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541244414198139410" /></a> And exhibit B, just what you don't want to see, a miscut Strasburg, miscut on the x-axis.</div><div><br /></div><div>Honestly, I don't mind a little off center. But that is a big swath of white on the right hand side. And there is no excuse for that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Or at least to the extent that it was present in my box.</div><div><br /></div><div>A Chrome box has 24 packs, 4 cards each. Some might have a super thick card, like a manu-patch, but this box did not. Thus 96 cards in the box. </div><div><br /></div><div>25 of those cards were rookies, 2 were autos, the rest were base or inserts.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of the 2 autos, both were well cut. But both were the Cub's Tyler Colvin. And one was smudged.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of the 25 rookie cards, 25 were miscut. Yes, 25 of 25. 100%</div><div><br /></div><div>Of the 69 remaining cards, 23 were miscut. 33%</div><div><br /></div><div>That means of the 96 cards, 48 were miscut. Exactly 50%.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have gone way past 1981 Fleer numbers here.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then there is the pringle issue, the habit of the cards to curl into a pringlesque shape. I ripped a pack of 2005 chome, and they were as flat and level as a flat and level board.</div><div><br /></div><div>But that is another gripefest entirely.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have a second box that seems to be about the same, although I did not run the numbers, so speak. Perhaps I will.</div><div><br /></div><div>So do you have similar numbers in your boxes, box breakers? Retails seems a smidge better, as in, I have a rookie card from retail that ISN'T miscut. At least one. From hobby, I have none.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-57691393190123436702010-11-05T10:11:00.000-07:002010-11-09T09:47:16.214-08:00Sideways numbers<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>I was organizing my Jim Rice collection a few nights ago, starting with my not-quite-regulation 1975 Topps through my 2008 whatchamacallit. When I went looking for my 2005 Sp Authentic auto in Beckett, I found that Jim Rice had 337 cards issued in 2005.<div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f6GBIPKyN0U/TNQ8P0UBDOI/AAAAAAAAAYM/orObOrYEUvs/s400/rice.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536116084383485154" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 270px; height: 380px; " /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><a href="http://www.checkoutmycards.com/">Stolen from COMC, doncha know.</a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>337 cards.</div><div><br /></div><div>He had 323 cards issued during his playing career. That includes a handful of stickers and pins listed in Beckett (but not a couple of cups listed there).</div><div><br /></div><div>So a decade after Rice retired, he had more cards issued in his name that during his entire playing career in one year.</div><div><br /></div><div>1975; 5</div><div>1976; 9</div><div>1977; 5</div><div>1978; 12</div><div>1979; 11</div><div>1980; 9</div><div>1981; 15</div><div>1982; 15</div><div>1983; 15</div><div>1984; 40</div><div>1985; 25</div><div>1986; 53</div><div>1987; 46</div><div>1988; 24</div><div>1989; 23</div><div>1990; 12</div><div><br /></div><div>In 1991, he had one card, something called Pacific Senior League, which was issued after the Pacific Senior League had folded.</div><div><br /></div><div>2 cards each in 1992 and 1993, then none until 1997, when the Pawtucket Red Sox put out a couple in his honor.</div><div><br /></div><div>There was an increase in Rice cards, perhaps as companies began to sense that Rice was getting closer to the Hall of Fame, to which he was elected in 2009. Or maybe it was because Red Sox rooters are a loyal bunch, even if everyone seems to hate them (Red Sox fans) nowadays.</div><div><br /></div><div>Looking at these numbers kind of threw me. On one hand, the more the merrier. On the other...</div><div><br /></div><div>Sets Jim Rice appeared in in 2005;</div><div><br /></div><div>Absolute Memorabila; 28 cards</div><div>Artifacts; 17 cards</div><div>Donruss Classics; 6 cards</div><div>Donruss Elite; 6 cards</div><div>Donruss Greats; 12 cards</div><div>Donruss Team Heros; 6 cards</div><div>Leaf Century Stamps; 20 cards</div><div>Leaf Certified Materials; 12 cards</div><div>Leaf Cleanup Crew; 2 cards</div><div>Leather and Lumber; 16 cards</div><div>National Pastime; 8 cards</div><div>SP Authentic; 8 cards</div><div>SP Legendary Cuts ;80 cards</div><div>SPx; 2 cards</div><div>Sweet Spot Classic; 7 cards</div><div>Throwback Threads; 8 cards</div><div>Timeless Treasures; 13 cards</div><div>Topps All-Time Fan Favorites; 3 cards</div><div>Topps Pristine Legends; 12 cards</div><div>Topps Rookie Club; 20 cards</div><div>UD Past Time Pennants; 7 cards</div><div>UD Portraits; 8 cards</div><div>Ultimate Signatures; 7 cards</div><div>Upper Deck Classics; 14 cards</div><div>Upper Deck Triology; 11 cards</div><div><br /></div><div>Bear in mind, this is for a guy who had not actually made it into the Hall of Fame, and when he did make it in, people bitched about it.</div><div><br /></div><div>So on one hand, I think, does anyone really need a set with 8 different number variations? And on the other, I think, man, how cool is that, 8 different numbered variations!</div><div><br /></div><div>What say you, fellow collectors? Can you have too many cards, or were things on the right track back in 2005? I don't think there are enough sets being issued this year. Check that, I don't think there are enough companies issuing sets this year.</div><div><br /></div><div>So how many cards are too many? Should there be sets with 80 different cards of one player? Or is a couple enough? Or should the base sets, collected by poor, easily confused grandmothers have 1 or 2 variations, and with the higher end sets, anything goes?</div><div><br /></div><div>I guess it was just an eye opener, looking back at 2005, a year I was out of cards, and by then had been out of cards for a while. </div><div><br /></div><div>Maybe that funny feeling I get when I see that magic number (337. Ok, not so magic) next to Jim Rice's name if longing, longing for a time when there was competition in baseball card land, and the companies involved put out quality products.</div><div><br /></div><div>Those were the days, I guess.</div><div><br /></div><div>For some perspective; all-time great Johnny Bench had 972 cards in 2005.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4580853485287632939.post-76649966004774853532010-11-03T09:01:00.000-07:002010-11-03T09:05:52.473-07:00Thank you!I love trading. Love it. I love looking through peoples wants lists and digging through my own piles and seeing what I can find. It reconnects me with cards that are generally sitting in stacks or boxes, or stacks of boxes. I love team collectors, and filling gaps in their pages. I am digging through a couple now, so a couple collectors are going to get emails soon.<div><br /></div><div>That said, I don't do trade posts. Not because I don't like them, in fact I feel like a heel for not doing them, but because my only access to a scanner is at work, and I have to sneak scans when everyone else has gone home. So by the time I would be able to scan cards, the trades would have long been, well, not forgotten, per se, but you know what I mean. </div><div><br /></div><div>So thank you, to all the collectors I have traded with this year. I just started keeping track, and I have done seven trades in under a month, with seven different traders. So thank you again,to all of you out there, for helping me stay connected to the hobby that has sunks its hooks into me deep, yet again.</div>Cardsplitterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02848913597562844505noreply@blogger.com2
