Pedro Martinez collection until 2004

While Beckett is a fine resource to look up cards, it is not the easiest site to deal with. So I present to you an updated but incomplete list of my Pedro Martinez collection.

Pedro is my favorite baseball player, and I was fortunate to see him pitch a few times, including a 15K gem against the Rays back in 1999.

Completing the list is a work in progress. I have doubles of many of these cards, so if you need some, drop me a line.

Percentages are just a way to make me seem insignificant in the eyes of the baseball card gods, and thus deflect attention away from myself. Nothing to see here. (damn there are a lot of cards out there, even as far back as the early-mid 1990s.)

Topps Chrome Mutant set

Pending me getting off my duff and sending all the miscut cards from my two boxes of 2010 Topps Chrome in to be replaced (and them actually being replaced with non miscut cards) I will be pretty close to the set. This is just an assumption, but I am fairly certain I am near completion.

But closer to my heart is a mutant set of Topps Chrome. I have to do something with all those refractors, and checkerfractors, and the rainbow of fractors that you end up with, orange, red, blue, purple and gold. I don't have any red refractors for my set, the only red refractor I pulled in my two boxes as a T206 Austin Jackson Chrome Red. Which is a pretty nice pull, as it is numbered to 25.

The cards I have:
(r)=refractor
(c)=checkerboard refractor (what else do you call them? Superfractors? Sortasuperfractors?)
(o)=orange
(p)=purple /599
(g)=gold /50

I like the checkboard-fractors, the regular refractors, the blue, red, purple, orange and gold, in that general order. The golds may only be numbered to 50, but they are kind of ugly. I will post some doubles if anyone is after any refractors. If anyone wants an orange something and can trade a refractor of the same player, I would probably consider it. That goes of the rest as well.

Livin' in the '80s.

I am pleasingly close to completing a decade, just 29 players away from a card of every player to wear a Sox uniform during the 1980s.

Pictured, of course, is a gorgeous Donruss 1982 Jerry Remy. By gorgeous I mean kind of boring, and a fairly unimaginative effort. But Donruss was but a year old then, so we will let it pass.

Remy is probably better known as a broadcaster than the "100th best secondbaseman in history according to Bill James" at this point. I have never heard him, since he works for NESN, which was an extra cost when I lived in New England oh so long ago. The first I heard of NESN was that we didn't have it, and that was where most of the Red Sox games were, which pissed my wee self off. I liked Bob Montgomery on WSBK. Since that is what we had.

Player, and years played with the Sox, not card years;

Jack Billingham, 1980
Sam Bowen, 1977-1980
Brian Denman, 1982
Jim Dorsey, 1984-1985
Lee Graham, 1983
John Lickert, 1981
Tom McCarthy, 1985
Stan Papi, 1979-1980
Dave Schmidt, 1981
Danny Sheaffer, 1987
Ted Sizemore, 1979-1980
Chico Walker, 1980-1984 (minor league cards)

Hell, I don't even know if all of them even had cards as Red Sox.

And now, a musical interlude. Rock!

The Joy of Perfect Collation

I bought two boxes of 10 A&G for Gint-a-Cuffs II. And after I put them all in a binder I discovered I did not have a single double. Alas and alack, two boxes of 10 A&G won't complete the set, but it was a fine sight none the less.

After a few blasters that actually did very little to help the cause (one had 4 SPs and nothing else I needed, another had 7 historys and nothing else I needed- but I needed every history in the blaster) I have come to managable want list. And here it is!

none.
Hooray! After ripping a random pack, I pulled the last card I need! I do need some This Day in History cards though;

This Day in History;
1, 3, 17, 67

I have some doubles, artifacts and autographs to trade. Also have some minis and mini inserts, too.

'70s Sox

After rediscovering my affection for cardboard, and becoming thoroughly addicted to the siren song of the card aisle, I started reading the various baseball card blogs out there, including the ones listed at right, some of my favorites.

I collected a handful of players back in my formative years, including David Justice, among others. Buying cards was fun, but I felt unfocused, and stacks of cards accumulated quickly.

And then, reading the various blogs, it came to me. Collect a card from every player ever to wear a Red Sox uniform. All the way back to Speaker and Duffy.

But where to start? I have a stack of 20k boxes at my parents house in Arizona, which covers the '80s and early 1990s, so those decades are up in the air until I get the cards back. So how about the '70s!

The front of a 1971 Rico Petrocelli. Interesting how the name is not capitalized. Rico had some good years in Boston, including 1969, when he hit .297 with 40 homers. He tailed off at the end of his career, ending with a career line that includes 1553 games, 1352 hits, 773 RBIs, 210 home runs and an average of .251. It looks like Rico has a good ol' plug in his jaw, too.

The back. I like the first year box.

Wait, you say, that is a '71 card. Where is the 1970 card?

This is about the Red Sox of the 1970s, not the cards of the 1970s. A card from 1970 is of a player and his stats from 1969, thus goes in the 1960s section of the binder.

Yaz, on the psychedelic tombstone, 1972 Topps.

Look at the numbers thus far into his career. Yaz might be the best Red Sox player ever, because as far as I know, he wasn't a prick, like the guy normally associated with being the best hitter ever. 19 freaking '67. Clutch, too, witness the last 2 games of the season to clinch the pennant. He went 6 for 8 or something outlandish like that. Awesome. This card is awesome, too.

I like this card. I like how happy Luis Tiant looks. I like the 1973 design, too. Luis Clemente Tiant won 15, 20, 22, 18, 21 between '72 and '76.

The cartoon is awesome. I also like how Topps includes his Mexican League stats too. Pretty sweet.

A 1974 Rogelio Moret was the oldest card in my collection for a while, so maybe that is why the 1974 design screams "generic old baseball card" design to me. I like it. Simple and clean. And this one is great because it features Bill "Spaceman" Lee. I read his book when I was a kid. I don't think I was supposed to, but my parents left it laying around, so I grabbed it and read it.

The back of a 1974 Topps. Dig that cartoon. Not sure it would fly today.

1975. Perhaps the most iconic Topps set of my almost lifetime. (1974 was the year before I was born). I had a bunch of '75 reprint things when I was a kid, so this is a set that lives in my heart as well. Some of the color combos are pretty far out there. This miscut beaut features 1975 World Series game 3 hero Bernardo Carbo.

The back of a 1975 card.

Another Bill Lee card, a 1976 this time. I run hot and cold on the '76 cards. The clip art pitcher that works so well in 1973 comes up short in 1976, and all the cards (at least all the ones I have seen) are Red and Yellow. I like the action shots in the set, but there is an awfull lot of shadow on Mr. Lees face. I don't like that.

Good ol' Jim O'Rourke.

There you have a few cards from the first half or so of the 1970s.

And below you will find a want list of players I need to complete my '70s collection by years played (not by card years.)

Luis Alvarado, 1968-1970
Kim Andrew, 1975

Bobby Sprowl, 1978
Lee Stange, 1966-1970
John Tudor, 1979-1983
Ernie Whitt, 1976
Stan Williams, 1972

The above list is from the Red Sox site, which has a few holes- they miss a few players here and there. Note that I have cards of several of the players above from the 1960s, but I want a card a decade, like Sparky Lyle. I have a couple 1960s Sparkys, but I don't have that 1971 card of his.

2009 Goudy needs

The much-maligned 2009 Goudy set is the first set I started attempting since, oh, 1992 Donruss. In 1992.

2, 26, 28, 50, 59, 86, 88, 109, 139, 145, 157, 163, 193

I knew nothing about "short prints" when I got back into cards in late 2009. Never heard of them, they *might* have had 'em back in the early 1990s, but I didn't know about them.

So the list of the short prints. And no, the set is not complete without them.

201, 206, 207, 210, 211, 212, 213, 215, 218, 220, 221, 224, 225, 226, 229, 230, 232, 233, 234, 235, 238, 241, 242, 243, 244, 246, 248, 250, 251, 252, 255, 256, 259, 263, 264, 266, 267, 268, 269, 272, 274, 276, 277, 278, 280, 281, 282, 283, 285, 287, 290, 293, 294, 295, 296, 297, 298, 300

I don't really care about the minis. I like 'em, but as you can see, my regular set is far, far, far from complete, despite buying two boxes worth of the stuff.

I do like the cards that feature four players, but I don't know where I put them, so I can't tell you all what I need.
